Empowering Recovery After a Stroke

A stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident, occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted by a blocked artery or burst blood vessel. Strokes are potentially deadly and a leading cause of disability. During a stroke, lack of oxygen triggers a series of biochemical reactions known as an ischemic cascade that can permanently damage the brain. Depending on the extent and location of the disease, patients may experience:

  • Paralysis on one or both sides of their body
  • Weakened muscles that interfere with daily activities
  • Trouble thinking and learning new skills
  • Decreased judgment, memory, awareness, and attention
  • Difficulty talking or understanding what’s being said to them
  • Problems controlling or expressing their emotions
  • Tingling or numbness on one side of their body
  • Physical limitations that make it hard to chew and swallow food
  • Incontinence or difficulty accessing toilet facilities
  • Pain in the hands and feet

Recovering from a stroke can be a complex and difficult process, especially for older adults. Rehabilitation is emotionally and physically demanding, requiring patience and persistence. A full recovery normally requires extensive professional support, including medication, counseling, and therapy to regain speech, strength, balance, and mobility.

Role of PEMF in Stroke Recovery

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy is an alternative treatment used to enhance healing and recovery for a wide range of ailments, including arthritis, torn ligaments, and osteoporosis. It began gaining traction in the late 1960s, when NASA used it to help astronauts cope with the effects of weightlessness in outer space.

Because it works on a molecular level, PEMF also offers remarkable benefits to stroke patients. It accelerates basic cellular functions while increasing the flow of oxygen and nutrients within your brain, allowing it to form, repair, and strengthen neural connections.

When combined with traditional therapy, PEMF helps your brain grow and reorganize its synaptic network, improving both neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. In stroke patients, it helps compensate for damaged tissue by creating new pathways between different parts of the brain.

PEMF also suppresses inflammation, which can worsen outcomes and even compromise the blood brain barrier, by encouraging production of anti-inflammatory proteins known as cytokines. There is even evidence PEMF has neuroprotective benefits. By stimulating the production of neurotrophins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor, it promotes the growth, survival, and maintenance of nerve cells, which mitigates the long-term damage that can occur after a stroke.

Effects of PEMF on Stroke Patients

Janet was a 53-year-old woman who had been suffering physically, mentally, and emotionally for five years following a stroke. Her condition had left her with spasticity and weakness in her left side, requiring assistance to carry out daily activities. She was also suffering from depression, anxiety, and an increasing dependence on alcohol.

Because of her limited success with traditional therapy and medication, she decided to explore alternative care options to help manage tone, reduce pain, and restore her independence. She embarked on a four-week program of Aura Wellness PEMF therapy sessions, targeting her foot drop, spasticity, head, and neck with low-intensity electromagnetic field pulses.

Within a month, Janet saw remarkable improvements to her physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Her blood pressure normalized and her hip and lumbar pain declined. She also experienced:

  • Reduced pain and increased range of motion in her left shoulder. Tone decreased in her elbow and hand as well. In addition, she regained movement in her thumb and was able to flex and extend her wrist once again.
  • Enhanced gait quality and active dorsiflexion in her left foot, leading to fewer falls. Her balance recovered to the point she was able to walk and climb stairs without assistance.
  • Greater focus, memory, and concentration, as well as an 80 percent reduction in headaches. As her confidence rose, she no longer required her anxiety and depression medication. Alcohol consumption dropped as well.

The benefits were so substantial, Janet purchased her own Aura Wellness device so she could continue recuperating in the privacy of her home.
