Accelerating Athletic Recovery

February 5, 2024

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body, but one of the most vulnerable as well. Its high rate of motion makes it both flexible and unstable, which is why it’s more prone to injury than any other part of your body. Shoulder damage is particularly common in athletes who engage in strenuous and repetitive overhead motion, such as swimmers, tennis players, baseball players, and weight lifters.

Most shoulder problems involve the muscles, ligaments, and tendons rather than the bones. Impingements, tendonitis, and rotator cuff tears are not only debilitating, but difficult to heal. The shoulder is an intricate joint with a relatively limited blood supply. Rehabilitation is not only complex, but often prolonged due to the joint’s comparatively low access to oxygen and nutrients.

Without proper treatment, shoulder injuries can have a serious and adverse effect on an athlete’s career. An extended recovery not only keeps them from playing while they heal, but may deprive them of a chance to compete at the collegiate or professional level. Worse, a poor recovery can result in diminished strength, recurring pain, reduced range of motion, and permanent joint instability.

Optimizing Recovery Approach

Shoulder injuries are treated with a series of therapeutic exercises, designed to restore function, strength, and mobility. While there is no substitute for this type of recovery, physical therapists are discovering that incorporating Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) treatment accelerates the process while also providing better outcomes.

Every cell in your body communicates through bioelectric signals, which regulate hormones, tissue behavior, and blood flow. Exposing cells to strong electromagnetic pulses invigorates the body’s natural healing mechanisms. By stimulating organs, blood vessels, and immunity cells, it spurs regeneration, triggers the release of anti-inflammatory proteins, and improves circulation in damaged collagen and muscle fibers.

This is why injured athletes who supplement their physical therapy with PEMF treatments typically see better results. Lab experiments have already demonstrated its effectiveness at improving tendon-to-bone healing in torn rotator cuffs, while double-blind studies have shown it improves function and muscle strength in shoulder impingement syndrome, also known as swimmer’s shoulder.

AuraWell patients have already experienced many of these benefits firsthand. One, a 17-year-old multisport athlete suffering from a shoulder tear in the inferior labrum, saw remarkable improvement after just four sessions. Performing guided movements during PEMF therapy restored his full range of motion in only two weeks, allowing him to return to sports and compete aggressively for the rest of the season.
