Think PEMF is a Scam? Think Again!

PEMF is a safe, proven therapy that complements and augments traditional medical treatments in order to improve patient outcomes for a wide range of injuries and ailments. Despite its growing popularity and adoption within the medical field, concerns have been raised about its effectiveness. Is PEMF therapy quackery? Skeptics will be surprised to find that the science behind PEMF is robust, extensive, and long-established. Doctors and scientists have been studying the connection between biology and electromagnetism for over a century.

Nikola Tesla was one of the first to observe how easily electricity passes through human tissue. With his discovery of the rotating electric field, he reasoned it was possible to control our entire system electronically, if only we could develop the tools to harness it. Though serious research into electromagnetic therapy wouldn’t begin until after World War II, Tesla and his contemporaries laid the groundwork for modern PEMF devices as far back as the 1880s.

The first functional PEMF devices were large and bulky, similar to CAT scanners. During the space race, NASA developed smaller units to improve the health of astronauts while they orbited outside Earth’s magnetic field. By the 1970s, veterinarians were using them to heal fractures in racehorses. It wasn’t until 1979, however, that the FDA approved the first PEMF device for use by ordinary Americans.

More than a dozen PEMF devices have been approved since then, designed for everything from depression to migraines to chronic pain and more. Contrary to what some have said, these aren’t fly-by-night money making schemes. Hundreds of studies have been conducted on PEMF and its effects, which are far-reaching and powerful.

How Does PEMF Therapy Work?

Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency (PEMF) therapy stimulates microcirculation: the movement of blood through the smallest vessels in your circulatory system. Every cell in your body is managed through bioelectric signals, which control the rate at which cells break down glucose to form energy, a process known as cellular respiration.

PEMF alters these signals, telling your body to accelerate normal cellular activity, which requires a greater supply of oxygen and nutrients. As a result, PEMF triggers increased blood flow anywhere it’s applied. By increasing cellular function, PEMF also supercharges tissue repair, leading to faster healing times and reduced pain. It’s the reason why PEMF therapy is offered in physical therapy and medical offices, as well as collegiate and professional sporting facilities around the country.

Is There Research Supporting PEMF?

There have been over 60 studies examining the effects of PEMF therapy. Over and over again, researchers find PEMF helps patients heal faster while producing no noticeable side effects. Though not a substitute for conventional remedies, it’s proven to aid treatment of a number of conditions, including:

PEMF is powerful because it works with your body’s natural recovery mechanisms. Besides helping with specific maladies, studies have found that PEMF therapy also promotes several types of general fitness, such as:

Some of these benefits are well documented while others are still being explored. Nonetheless, they offer an exciting look into an encouraging new therapy that shows great potential for improving health. Concerns over novel treatments are understandable. Many emerging therapies are unproven, and some may do more harm than good. PEMF, on the other hand, is proven and promising ‒ one of the most provocative therapies to emerge over the past 50 years.
