What Are the Side Effects of PEMF Therapy?

PEMF therapy stimulates bodily tissues with magnetic waves that energize your body’s regenerative processes. An alternative and complementary treatment for acute and chronic health conditions, PEMF therapy has a number of proven benefits, including:

  • Pain Relief. PEMF exposure is associated with significant reductions in pain, especially in those suffering from fibromyalgia and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Bone Generation. Electromagnetic fields have been shown to promote growth of bone cells, which is why they’re often employed when treating fractures and osteoporosis.
  • Tissue Repair. Studies have shown PEMF therapy reduces healing times, particularly in patients suffering from tendon and muscle injuries.
  • Inflammation Reduction. Pulsed electromagnetic fields increase the production of anti-inflammatory proteins, which improves tissue regeneration.
  • Stress Relief. People who use PEMF on a regular basis report heightened focus and clarity, as well as lower levels of stress and anxiety.

Researchers have studied PEMF for decades, going all the way back to the 1960s. Their findings indicate that the treatment is safe and effective when used appropriately. Adverse reactions are rare and when they occur, they’re normally mild and short-lived. That said, it’s important to be aware of the potential side effects of PEMF therapy in order to make informed decisions regarding your health.

PEMF Therapy Side Effects

The most significant advantage of PEMF is that it accelerates your body’s natural functions, primarily cellular respiration ‒ the process that turns glucose into energy. Intensifying your body’s metabolism also intensifies the recovery process, which can lead to possible side effects in some patients. The most common are fatigue and muscle twitches.

Fatigue is a byproduct of increased cellular respiration, which forces the body to expend more energy on basic functions and can leave patients feeling a little worn out at the end of their session. Fortunately, the feeling rarely lasts more than a few hours, at most. A short rest and a good meal is usually all that’s needed to restore your strength.

Stimulating nerve cells sometimes causes involuntary contractions or twitches within the treated area. Though not cause for concern, these types of spasms can be irksome. Fortunately, they’re generally fleeting and resolve on their own without any medical intervention.

Some patients have also experienced headaches, dull throbbing, and minor skin irritation, but it’s uncommon. In fact, most of the time, patients don’t report any side effects at all!

Precautions for Safe Therapy

In the rare cases where they do occur, side effects of PEMF therapy pass quickly without causing any lasting or serious harm. However, there are a select number of patients who should consult a doctor before starting PEMF therapy, due to their heightened risk of complications.

  • Diabetics. Boosting cellular respiration lowers glucose levels, which can create problems for people who have difficulty managing their blood sugar.
  • Patients with Low Blood Pressure. PEMF increases production of plasma nitric oxide, which dilates blood vessels. As a result, people with cardiovascular conditions may be at greater risk of dizziness or fainting.
  • Pregnant Women. While there have been no studies looking into the effects of PEMF on pregnancy, doctors have discovered that exposure to electromagnetic fields can increase your risk of a miscarriage.
  • Pacemaker Wearers. Electromagnetic fields can interfere with electrical devices, such as pacemakers. New pacemaker technology has additional shielding to protect it from electromagnetic fields. Before starting therapy, patients should check with their physician to make sure their pacemaker is safe around PEMF devices.
